SAVE ST BRIGID’S

BULLETIN #25              November 1st,  2006

  1. Sister Betty Ann opened the meeting with a prayer
  2. The Chair reviewed the minutes from the previous meeting and spoke about the Irish Society Gala held at the Congress centre.  St. Brigid’s was well represented..

Over the weekend Saturday the rain was very heavy and the leaks were appearing under the tarpaulin extensively.  Saturday the strong wind gusts up to 95km per hour removed many shingles which were flying off the roof like birds.  Three bags of shingles were gathered up Sunday afternoon.  They will be sent to IKO the shingle manufacturer.  Following last week’s meeting several parishioners had a separate meeting to move ahead.  We would get costs on remedial repair of the most serious parts of the roof, negotiate with IKO who had been advised through two letters October 03 and November 05 that the roof was failing and had failed its warranty; obtain costs for installation, and cost of scaffolding.  The specifications for tender and installation would be in this week, and the team were prepared to take action.

Faxes were sent to the Archdiocese and to the Ontario Heritage Trust advising of the deterioration of the roof and the need to take immediate action.  Father Amyot was also advised of our concerns and the necessity to move ahead.  A telephone call was arranged between Fr. Amyot, Msgr. Kevin Beach and Marilyn Donoghue to discuss action.  Msgr. Beach stated that St. Brigid’s was still an entity, and the financial responsibility for the roof was St. Brigid’s.  The process to follow was that we would advise the Archdiocese of the remedial costs, through Fr. Amyot, as soon as they were available for a recommendation.  We must have 50% of the funding required to proceed.  He believed we did not have sufficient unrestricted funds, and that if a loan was required that too should be submitted.  A brief description would be required, and the availability of funds from the Finance Council.  A call had been placed to the Archdiocese that morning from the Ontario Heritage Trust while this discussion was taking place. No word has been received by the trust.

A meeting was held with Msrs. Gillin and Valiquette, Snetsinger Consultants and Marilyn Donoghue.  One contractor had responded to our request out of 12 contacted.  He was however very highly recommended by our consultant, carried the appropriate insurance and had the necessary experience to work on this roof.  He also did considerable business with IKO Manufacturing.

  1. Old Business

Legal Process –The date has been established for the application for Judicial Review.  It is February 14, 2007.  The Chair had been advised by the lawyers that the lawyers for the Archbishop would like to set up a cross examination date, and they in turn would cross examine the Archbishop for several hours.  Several dates were offered by no decision was made.

The election nominations closed on October 25th, and a meeting was held this week with Fr. Amyot to approve both the Parish Pastoral Council and the Finance Council.  The first meeting will be November which will be a joint one held in the Parish hall.

Arrangements have been made for a group picture in front of the church as well as in front of the scaffolding,  which will be erected starting tomorrow.

The Ceili at Blessed Sacrament was announced for Nov 18th at 8:00pm.  The following morning will be the 3rd Pancake Breakfast in the Parish Hall at St. Brigid’s
