SAVE ST BRIGID’S
BULLETIN #26 November 15th
2006
- Sister Betty Ann opened the evening meeting with a prayer, and
thanks for the wonderful November 11th mass honouring our war living and dead.
- The Chair reviewed the minutes from the previous meeting and
spoke about the photo opportunity that was taken on the first of November. Unfortunately
the transfer of the digital work from the camera failed and the photos were lost. The
photographer was saddened regarding this loss and will endeavour to take another following the 10am mass on Sunday, and prior
to the pancake breakfast which should draw a large crowd.
The
ICOMOS meeting held in the church was a excellent opportunity to hear about the restoration of the Vimy Ridge memorial. It will be rededicated in the sprint by Queen Elizabeth. The talk and slides by Julian Smith were both informative and interesting.
Professor Stovel, and his group of graduate students and visitors were impressed with the talk that Elizabeth Krug
gave on the background and history of St. Brigid’s and particularly the architect James Bowes. Professor Stovel suggested that several of his graduate students would be very interested in doing research
at and conservation work, as part of their academic program.
The 5:00 mass held on November 11th honored the many parishioners both living and deceased who had served in the
Canadian wars. The names of all the parishioners were read by Father Tim accompanied
by Tom Fagan on the organ, which ended with the Last Post being played on the organ.
It was a very moving experience.
St. Brigid’s church was listed with Heritage Canada Foundation in the Landmark Preservation program in 2003. Through
an auction to raise funds for this program they contributed a cheque for the restoration program in the amount of $595.75. We thank them very kindly for their wonderful contribution.
Roof report – A meeting was held on Tuesday 14th with the roofing consultant
and the roofing contractor. The cost of the roof had been quoted at $186,000 plus GST.
This is for the whole roof, and the contractor is recommending that it should be done rather that a piece meal The
damage is too extensive and will negate a claim for non performance. The scaffolding
is up we hope to start as soon as we can. A proposal will be prepared outlining
the background of the complaints and the claim against the roof shingles, It will be put forward to the Emergency meeting
of the Finance and Parish councils for approval and then will be taken by Father Tim to the Archdiocese and Msgr. Kevin Beach. We will use a better quality IKO tile with a 40 year warranty. It is expected that we will be given a rebate of the shingles and possibly some cash on the labour by IKO. It is also anticipated that the $25,000 grant will be accepted by the Archdiocese
given by the Ontario Heritage Foundation. The work must start immediately in
order to complete the project prior to the set in of serious cold weather, but
it has been difficult as there has been so much rain. The roofing contractor
is Ray Cry Roofing and Sheet Metal of Ottawa.
Work Party A review of the Energy Audit has
indicated there are a number of tasks that can be undertaken by a group of parishioners.
i.e. Lighting, weatherstripping, caulking, and general closure of openings in the doors and exterior walls. A list will be made up and the program has been set for December 9th, 2006. Volunteers are Melanie, Ann, Steve Gordie, Joann, Chris, The Cody’s,
Work plans will be developed prior to that date.
